ETHIOPIA, empowerment projects in various areas

Produced by Sara Fijo / Gondola Films for the World Bank Micro-documentaries written and made by José M. Borrell Project on Climate Change and adaptation with new techniques. Soil and moisture conservation practices: the strategy is adopted to reduce soil degradation and moisture loss, and is observed both in the highlands and in the middle and lowlands. Activities include the implementation of runoff diversion techniques, and the construction and maintenance of field terraces and stone deposits. Crop selection, early and late planting, and re-tillage practices: farmers in the area also select the species or variety of crops planted as an adaptation strategy. For example, in the central parts, a variety of early ripening sorghum is commonly preferred to the traditional late ripening to maximize the unreliable duration of the rainy period. In some cases, crop species change temporarily or permanently depending on the rainfall pattern.
